Painting with a 14-month old

I was painting with River when I realized that with a different kind of brush miss Rue would be able to paint with us. She watched her older brother dip his brush into the paint and she wanted to dip and paint too!

We used a ice cube tray with 6 different colors of washable paint insidethe bottom 6 cube spots.
**The key was to use this stamper like paint brush.
She was able to grip it well and move it to whichever color she wanted.**

It turned out great!  Here is her first artwork done ALL by
herself at the ripe age of 14-months.
(The only thing I did was hold the ice cube tray.)

Since this post is somewhat dedicated to my little babe I thought I would share some of my favorite pics we recently had taken of Rue. They were done by a talented woman named Sonja. Here is her blog.

WOW, those pictures are absolutely precious. What a little sweetie. I probably wouldn't have thought of a 14-month-old painting, but you made just the right adjustments to make it work. I love the idea of letting her get her creativity out, especially since watching her big brother do it probably makes her want to even more. You are awesome. So you know those little vitamin container strips with the days of the week written on them? I thought they'd be perfect for mixing up small amounts of paint and then saving it until the next use. I wasn't sure if they'd be airtight or not, but I figured it was worth $1.87 to find out. So I brought it home and put water in the little compartments and when you turn it upside down it does leak just a tiny bit, but I think I'm still going to try storing my mixed paint in them. If nothing else, it's the perfect-sized container for small amounts of 7 different colors. Ice cube tray was a great idea, by the way.

Did she not try to eat the paint and paintbrush? I'd love to let my 14 month old paint when her big sister does, but she still puts everything in her mouth and I really don't want her eating paint!

Haley- When are you going to be my special guest preschool teacher? That is a great idea!

Abigail- Little Rue is a copier, meaning she will dip her cucumber in ranch dip if that's what she sees me do. So she really just wanted to dip and move her brush around just like her brother. She had painted the picture you see there and then was getting a little crazy (I think she might have put the brush near her mouth) I took away the brush and paints and said, all done.

Rachel- I'm glad you liked the ice cube idea, I bet baby Graham would love it!

Heather- Thanks for the compliment on my hair because I feel like it is always out of control so that's why I just put it in a ponytail.

What precious photos and a precious masterpiece by Rue. She must have had a ball creating and painting all by herself.
