Letter G: g-g-g green glitter glue

I created dotted lines to form the upper G & lower g on gold colored paper. Then asked River if he could squeeze the glue on the dotted lines in the shape of Gg the goose, to my surprise he stayed on the lines quite well!

for the upper G we used green glitter

lower g small gold pieces of pipe cleaner left over from Christmas

TaDa! River was excited about adding his little extra gold piece on the side of g, and I think the glue on G slid around a bit as I tried to shake off the excess glitter.

Letter G- Math time with green and gold

The length of time we spent having some fun math time probably added up to hmm...5 minutes. We made these clovers earlier this week and stuck them in the sensory bin. The clovers either had 2,3, or 4 hearts. I emphasized that finding a 4- leaf clover was lucky because it's not as common, and as you can see here, not as symmetrical.

I asked River to match up the gold coins with the correct number of leaves on each clover. He counted out the coins and put the clover on top of them when he was finished, and yeah that's about it. He said, "Mama I'm done." Ok, got the clue we were done.

I definitely believe that you only teach to the interest of your child, especially math. I don't want him to begin to have any negative associations! Well, later on he got out some newspaper and scotch tape to build a home for his Trios blocks. I was pretty impressed with his own initiative to create and build. "Yes, we did have a positive school time moment today!" Then about one or two hours later he asked, "So are we going to have school time today?" I responded, "Yeah, remember we counted out the coins to match the clover." Then he responded, "Well can we do something else now?"
I love this pic, because he said, "Ok, Mama now you need a picture of me..Cheese." (He is such a little Ham with his perfected Cheeser smiles :)

Letter G- Spider letters

I try to do various kinds of mid-week reinforcement activities to help River remember what letter we are working on for the week. So today we did Spider letters!

We used the lowercase foam letters, and his favorite spiderman container.

I think every household should own the uppercase and lowercase foam letters from the dollar store. We use them all the time and haven't lost very many yet. (fingers crossed)

I picked out about seven letters including "g" to put inside the spiderface. River then picked one out and went through the flipchart to find the match. We pretended the letters were spiders crawling all around  the pages trying to find its home.
It was an easy, simple, activity!

Letter G- Intro to G, Leprechaun song

We started school time by playing musical letters, our own variation :) We put the Amazing Action Alphabet CD on and put out all the laminated letters (the ones found in the back on the activity book). As soon as a letter song comes on River runs around tying to find the correct letter the song is about. Once he finds it he sits in my lap and uses his finger to trace the letter. We did about 13 letters today ending with G the Goose Giggles.

The corresponding story with the letter G introduces some new words, so we talked about giggled, gecko, and grazing goat. We looked at pics on-line on of the gecko, gorilla, gumdrops, and grazing goat as I read the story. (If you are actually one of those people who has a working printer and don't need to rotate between your neighbor's to print stuff off, then I would suggest printing off the pictures instead of just looking at them :)

Since we are also focusing on St. Patrick's Day this week I wanted River to see a "real life" leprechaun so we watched this clip of "Darby O' Gill and the Little People". As a child I loved this movie, watching the little people dance around a pot of gold. However, I hated the grim reaper and the lightening horses. (It's nice to have YouTube so you can watch specific clips, without fast forwarding a VHS tape.)

We also made some 4 leaf clovers and a pot of gold with a rainbow attached which we will post more about later. This is our cute finger play song for the week. I adapted it from the Insy, Wensy, Spider:

A small little Leprechaun
came out to play
To look for gold on this St. Patrick's Day
Under the Rainbow
is the spot he was told
With a jump, and a kick he ran toward the gold
