Introduce new theme with letter stones match game

I also teach the 5-year-olds at church so it's fun to try out new ideas with them. The theme of the lesson was "Have Faith in Jesus". Well, my little ones can't read so I try to think of ways to adapt the lesson to be applicable for their age. That's when I came up with this match game!

I used cardboard, glass stones,
stickers, and a permanent marker.

I wrote the topic of our lesson.

I first wrote the Letter onto the stickers.
Then cut each one out.

The finished game!!

It was great to work on letter recognition and
the structure of words.

Brilliant! It's hard to be creative when teaching non-readers - this is a great way to help them on their way to reading. On a side note, remind me to tell you about my alphabet circle sometime.

Hi!

You might like the post I did about stones. http://creativestarlearning.blogspot.com/2010/06/stones-part-1.html

I live near one of the oldest churches in Scotland...St Machar's Cathedral. The importance of stones is reflected in the Cathedral Church literature which states “St Machar’s is not simply a building of stones which provides protection, a safe place for the community to gather, but an edifice of stones whose voices enfold the community in centuries of praise and prayer, worship and witness…the stones of the Cathedral bear testimony to a variety of ways of worship, expressions of faith and discipleship emanating from different ecclesial traditions and times...”

I think that's a lovely spiritual link to make.

Best wishes
Juliet
